Connecting With Nature
We love nature because it is our inseparable connection to the outdoors and to the elements of nature.
To find true quality of life and live as harmoniously as possible with nature, we must be aware of the power it holds. When we attune ourselves to nature and accept that we are part of it, we are truly richly rewarded.
People should respect and appreciate nature more. For me personally, being in touch with nature brings one of the greatest joys: relaxation, a mental reset, and inner peace. Whether it’s swimming in the sea, a lake, or a river; sunbathing on the beach; walking through a meadow or forest; hiking up small hills; or one of my favorite activities—hiking in the mountains. Every aspect of nature embodies a unique grandeur that we must cherish and respect with all our hearts. Nature provides the environment and energy, and creates the conditions that allow us to live in harmony with it at all; that’s why I believe that connecting with nature is one of the most important things we can do for our minds.
Why Connecting with Nature Is Important
Nature is a universally free source of incredible benefits for people.
It keeps the mind sharp. It teaches history and respect for life and others. It provides an unbroken connection to our human roots.
Many people use nature as a way to stimulate creativity.
Others seek to create a rejuvenating retreat from the hustle and bustle of modern life.
The experience of immersing oneself in nature can even be deeply spiritual and life-changing (many seekers throughout the centuries have written that nature is the best way to access inner peace and find meaning in life).
Unfortunately, most people lack structured practices that would connect them with nature on a daily or weekly basis.
As our society seems to be growing increasingly chaotic and our fragile environment slides toward collapse, many people worry that we’ve gone too far down this path of chaos to turn back.
But when you make nature a priority, it changes your perspective and helps you truly feel that connection in your everyday life.
By using the techniques and exercises we’ve shared in this article, you now have a comprehensive understanding of how to connect with nature.
All you have to do is follow the steps and start practicing!
How to Connect with Nature
For millennia, people have been venturing into nature to seek a connection with something greater than themselves.
Generally speaking, anything that gets you outside and consciously connects you with birds, plants, and trees in a natural setting will help you feel more connected to nature.
However, there are also some truly excellent daily practices and mindfulness routines that can help you accelerate your progress and make the most of the time you spend outdoors.
Slow Down and Be Present
The most important thing to remember when you want to connect with nature is to learn to slow down and be truly present in the natural world.
Most people live at such a fast pace that they struggle to appreciate the subtle details of birds, plants, trees, and the natural environment.
If your mind is too preoccupied with thoughts of the past or the future, you won’t be able to experience nature, even if it’s right in front of you.
Modern society teaches us to move quickly and fill our schedules with activities, but when it comes to nature, this will actually hinder your ability to connect.
Slowing down is something we can do intentionally by taking a few deep breaths and letting go of everything that isn’t here, in the present moment.
You can think of this as a mini-meditation in nature, where you direct 100% of your energy toward the birds, plants, trees, and animals around you.
You can do this in just two or three minutes, and it’s the first step toward quickly feeling much more connected to nature.
Tune into Your Senses
Another great secret to connecting with the natural world is learning to consciously attune yourself to your five senses.
Nature is a sensory experience that humans have been experiencing since the dawn of our species.
However, technology and artificial environments have caused our potential for sensory awareness to atrophy in modern-day people.
If you ever find it difficult to achieve a more peaceful and meditative experience in nature, it’s probably because your five senses aren’t working together properly.
That’s why, when you first step outside, always take a few minutes to consciously attune yourself to your five senses.
Here’s a short sensory meditation to help you tune your awareness:
*Close your eyes and take a slow, deep breath.
*Feel the air entering through your nose and filling your lungs.
*Relax your physical body and allow yourself to feel all external sensations, such as the sun or wind on your skin.
*Feel your feet connecting with the ground.
*Feel your entire body becoming aware of the sense of space around you.
*Scan your auditory surroundings and listen to sounds such as birds, insects, or the wind rustling through the trees.
*For a few moments, listen in all directions—near and far—as you relax into your sense of hearing.
*Try to listen more deeply than you ever have before.
*Finally, open your eyes and focus on something beautiful. Let your attention expand outward and include your peripheral vision so that you can take in the entire scene.
*Engage your senses of smell and taste as much as possible.
*Slowly relax and feel a connection with nature with all your senses fully engaged.
Repeat this meditation often to make the most of every moment you spend outdoors!
